Trump 'cannot stand the truth': AOC urges voters to be wary of President's 'fairy tale' ahead of midterms

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed President Donald Trump, claiming that he lived in a make-believe world to avoid facing the truth. She made the statement during a rally in Lansing, Michigan, where she was campaigning for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed ahead of the midterm elections. The basis of Ocasio-Cortez's criticism was the President's primetime address to the nation last week, in which he cast doubt on the American election system, which many believe was the groundwork to reject the results of the midterms.

"Trump spent most of his speech rehashing the same big old tired lie about the 2020 election," Ocasio-Cortez said. "The man cannot stand the truth. So he has to manufacture a fiction where he is popular. A fairy tale about America where the majority of us fear our neighbors, where most of us think that this country is so much smaller than it actually is. But we have to remember that it is just that: fiction, fairy tales, a myth, a story, a lie."

During a separate rally in Detroit, Cortez repeated those sentiments, claiming that Trump's repeated accusations about the 2020 elections not being legitimate had nothing to do with what was true and what wasn't. "They will do everything they can to try to overturn our democracy in November," she said. "And if we do not take back the House or the Senate, we are going to make it a whole lot easier for him and his cronies to do just that."

At his prime-time address on Thursday, President Trump directed administration officials to declassify documents that prove that the 2020 election had elements of fraud. He also claimed that China had acquired information on more than 200 million American voters ahead of the election in an attempt to undermine him. However, the documents released did not contain substantial evidence supporting the claim; instead, they revealed that Russia might have been acting in favour of the GOP at the time.

Ocasio-Cortez is not the only one who has warned voters that President Trump has laid the groundwork for undermining the results of the midterm elections with his prime-time address. Several Democratic members of Congress have sounded the same alarm. Rep. James Walkinshaw called the President a "sore loser" before warning Americans against his alleged agenda.

"He's setting the stage to disrupt or even contest the midterm elections, but the good news is that folks are already organizing to prevent that. I just left a voting rights town hall...to work and make sure that our elections are free and fair and that the results are honored in the way that they should be whenever they might be. Donald Trump wants to prevent all that from happening," he said.

The race for control of the House and the Senate is heating up with only a few months left ahead of the midterm elections. While President Trump's approval rating might not be that high, a Washington Post-Ipsos poll shows that the race is tight between the two parties. As per USA Today, Democrats are leading Republicans by 3 percentage points, a slim margin.
