Jim McGovern slams 'Trump's reckless war in Iran', calls White House priorities a 'disgrace'
Even as President Donald Trump and his administration's top officials tout the success of Operation Epic Fury—its joint military operation with Israeli forces against Iran—the impact of the conflict has created a significant dent in global markets. In the U.S., too, the economic ramifications are evident. The S&P 500 has experienced its most volatile trading window since the 2020 pandemic, the manufacturing sector is bracing for a massive surge in shipping costs for containers from Asia, and analysts warn of a sudden spike in consumer prices if the conflict continues through the summer.
The Trump administration spent nearly $12 BILLION in a single week on an open-ended war of choice in the Middle East.

Democratic lawmakers, and a few Republicans, have repeatedly questioned the Trump administration's objectives in the war, accusing the President of "lying" and pointing out the cost Americans are paying for the conflict. Escalating this rhetoric, Rep. Jim McGovern said that the "priorities of this White House & GOP Congress are a disgrace." In a video posted on X, McGovern said, "It's Day 11 in Trump's endless war in Iran, and already he has spent close to $12 billion on this war. To put that in perspective, that's three times as much as we spend on fuel assistance each year…I'd rather make sure that families are warm in the winter rather than sinking countless billions into another endless stupid war halfway across the world."
Trump has now spent nearly $12 billion on his reckless war with Iran.

More than 3x what Congress allocates per year on helping struggling seniors & low-income families who can’t afford their home heating bills.

Among Republican lawmakers, Thomas Massie has criticised the President's action on Iran, claiming it does not align with Trump's "America First" campaign promises. "Waging war costs American taxpayers about $1 billion per day, which comes out to $10 per family per day, or $100 since the war began. This isn't America First," Massie had written in a social media post. In response, Trump has opposed Massie's campaign for the May 19 Primary elections, calling the Congressman "the worst Republican." The President has instead endorsed Ed Gallrein, a farmer and retired Navy SEAL, calling him a "true patriot". As per the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the first 100 hours of the operation are estimated to cost $3.7 billion; the cost is expected to drop and will depend on the effectiveness of Iran's retaliation.
The price of gas has gone up $0.47 and the price of diesel has gone up $0.83 in 10 days due to War with Iran.

As the Iran conflict continues, the fear of a prolonged conflict and disruptions in the passage of cargo through the Strait of Hormuz is reflected in the market and on gas prices. The White House has, however, assured that the price rise is temporary and will decrease significantly due to the U.S. gaining "energy dominance" after the conflict ends. But the possibility of any ceasefire in the Middle East remains unclear. As of now, President Trump has said that he can end the war whenever he wants. Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, on the other hand, has announced that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed and asked for all U.S. bases in the region to be immediately closed.
