"You push state legislatures to redraw maps in backroom deals," Kaine added.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine called President Donald Trump a “crybaby” in a recent post on X. Kaine was reacting to the President’s tirade against mail-in ballots, which he claimed influenced Virginia’s redistricting referendum. Kaine said the President himself started the practice as he pushed Republican state legislatures to gerrymander. Virginia voted ‘yes’ to new congressional maps, which would see Democrats control 10 out of the 11 seats in the state. Earlier, it was 6-5 in favour of the Democrats.

In his Truth Social post, Trump referred to himself as “an extraordinarily brilliant person,” and accused Democrats of making the referendum “purposefully unintelligible and deceptive.” “Even I had no idea what the hell they were talking about in the referendum, and neither do they!” he added. Despite the big win, Democrats’ joy was short-lived as a judge ordered the results of the vote not to be certified.

As per a CNN report, Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley ruled that the state lawmakers did not follow their rules in passing the redistricting referendum. Hurley also ruled that the ballot language was “flagrantly misleading.” State Attorney General Jay Jones said that the ruling would be appealed immediately. The fate of Virginia’s congressional map now lies with the state’s Supreme Court.

The result of the Redistricting Referendum vote spells trouble for Republicans ahead of the Midterms, which is why many of them are calling for the Virginia Supreme Court to rule against the proposed gerrymander. “Losing is not an option,” Rep. Chris Roy said in a recent interview on Fox News. He referred to Democrats as “Marxists” and urged Republicans to “get behind the President.”

“We need the Virginia Supreme Court to hopefully save us by striking down this ridiculous redistricting map,” Roy added. Rep. Byron Donalds also criticized the redistricting in an interview on Newsmax. He claimed that Democrats had a history of “radical gerrymanders,” as he pointed out Illinois and Massachusetts as examples. "Look what they did to Northern Virginia. If you look at their new map, they basically take pieces of Northern Virginia and strip them out to the suburbs and rural Virginia to make Democrat seats. I mean, this is insanity,” Donalds said.

Attorney General Jones, however, expressed confidence about the Referendum holding up in the state Supreme Court. “My office will immediately file an appeal in the Court of Appeals,” he said as per a CNBC report. “As I said last night, Virginia voters have spoken, and an activist judge should not have veto power over the People’s vote. We look forward to defending the outcome of last night’s election in court.”

The redistricting war ahead of the Midterm elections began when President Trump pushed Republican-led state legislatures in Texas, Ohio, North Carolina, and Missouri to adopt maps that would increase Republican seats. Democrats did the same in California, but the Virginia result has left GOP lawmakers stunned. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the Democrats, they might be seen as favorites in the Midterms.
