Ken Paxton's Senate nomination a sign of Trump's iron grip on the GOP, critics say
In what appears to be a shocking defeat for Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won the primary runoff, securing the Republican nomination. Paxton's chequered past, plagued by scandals and an impeachment, led Harry Sisson, a known political commentator, to bemoan America's embrace of questionable figures under President Donald Trump's auspices.
"Ken Paxton, a crook who got impeached by his own party, is the Republican Senate nominee in Texas. Trump's America, everyone!" Sisson wrote on X, echoing Democratic nominee James Talarico, who labelled Paxton "the most corrupt politician in America." Talarico will face Paxton in the November midterms for the Texas Senate seat, which has historically leaned heavily Republican.
This is the most corrupt ticket in Texas history.

Ken Paxton and every Republican candidate on the ballot now shares the ticket with Greg Abbott and his record of higher prices, shuttered neighborhood schools, and a government that works for billionaires instead of working…
Cornyn became the latest casualty in President Donald Trump's crusade to unseat Republicans he deems to be insufficiently loyal to him. His loss follows other defeats of Republican incumbents opposed by Trump, including Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy and Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie. Sisson, a registered Democrat, pointed to Ken Paxton's Senate nomination as less about Paxton himself and more about the state of the Republican Party. That a candidate once impeached by his own colleagues can still secure a nomination speaks to how Trump has reshaped what is and isn't disqualifying within the GOP, Sisson opined.
Cornyn was given the choice between dishonorable survival and honorable defeat. He chose dishonor, and he ended up with defeat.

Sisson doubled down on his attack, accusing Republicans of "lacking a spine," after Cornyn revealed to reporters that he intends to support the Republican ticket in his concession speech. "Tonight we've come up short," Cornyn said, adding that he respected the decisions of Texas voters. The loss makes Cornyn the first Republican from Texas to lose his primary while seeking reelection, according to the Associated Press.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7:

Talarico thanked Cornyn in an X post "for his years representing" Texas. "We don't agree on everything, but we both still believe in public service. To Senator Cornyn's supporters: you have a place in our campaign," he said. Many lawmakers and observers from both sides of the aisle believe that Paxton's nomination offers Democrats the best chance to flip the state, as Paxton is "too tainted, too extreme to connect with ordinary voters."
We were going to send out a reminder of why Ken Paxton is so terrible.

Trump congratulated Paxton following his win, and commended Cornyn for having run a "strong and powerful race" and a "truly great career." He added that Cornyn will remain his "friend for a long time to come" while deriding Talarico as the "worst TEXAS candidate" he had ever seen. He also announced that he will be campaigning on behalf of Paxton in Texas. The President endorsed Paxton last week, calling him an "America First Patriot," and a true "MAGA warrior."
