The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is being touted as one of the largest and most ambitious sporting events in history, featuring an expanded field of 48 teams. However, it has not come without its controversies, and the latest one involved a Dallas police officer and the Egyptian soccer team, ahead of their knockout clash with Australia.

In a video doing rounds on social media, player Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan was seen posing for a selfie with a young fan. However, a police officer was seen confronting a member of the Egyptian contingent, who wore a black outfit with their country's name written on the back. The player seemed confused before the situation turned violent. A shoving match between the police officer and the Egyptian assistant coach, identified as Ibrahim Hassan, unfolded, with the former asserting, "Back off."

The two then got into a verbal confrontation, which eventually de-escalated as the player was escorted out. Hours after the incident, the Egyptian Consulate in Dallas removed the police officer from the delegation's security escort. A source within the Egyptian national soccer team blamed "organizers’ poor handling" for the incident. "An altercation occurred between Ibrahim Hassan and a hotel security guard due to the organizers’ poor handling of the Egyptian fans," the source stated as per Egypt Independent. "The fans were eager to take commemorative photos with the players, but security intervened aggressively. This angered Hassan, who stepped in to object to their harsh demeanor."

The Egyptian team's press office issued a statement that blamed the security personnel for being inappropriate. "An Egyptian fan was taking photos with the players and with Ibrahim Hassan. The security personnel treated the fan inappropriately, which led Ibrahim Hassan and the players to intervene and ask the security team to treat him with respect. There was no confrontation," it said.

Netizens have criticised the incident, with some blaming the Trump administration's hardline policy on immigration for the altercation. "I can’t wait to hear people explain what “law” the Head Coach and other staff of the Egyptian National Team broke here for Randy the Dallas Police Officer to start pushing and shoving them," one user wrote. "As the host nation, this is embarrassing. The situation was chill. There was no need to step in and put hands on the staffer," quipped another. "Guy comes storming over and creates a situation; there was no issue to begin with," a third user opined.

The Egyptian team is in Dallas for a Round of 32 match in the FIFA World Cup against Australia. This is the first time the team has made it to the tournament's knockout stage, and at the end of 90 minutes were tied 1-1 with Australia. The team finished runners-up in Group G with 5 points. Australia, on the other hand, advanced as the runners-up in Group D with 4 points, thanks to a superior goal difference.
