A new 55-page report alleges that President Donald Trump took over what was supposed to be a bipartisan celebration of America's 250th birthday and turned it into a vehicle for his personal gain, his political agenda, his business ventures, and his associates, who allegedly used public funds via a shadow corporation lacking scrutiny. The report, "From Vanity to Insanity: How the White House Cheated the American People Out of Their 250th Birthday," was released by the Democratic House Natural Resources Committee on Thursday.

The report relies on confidential disclosures from sources interviewed by Committee Democrats, internal Freedom 250 documents and talking points obtained by the Committee, sworn testimony from two Committee hearings, and written responses from the National Park Foundation and the National Forest Foundation. Neither the White House nor the Freedom 250 has issued a comment on the report yet.

Jared Huffman (D-CA), the ranking member on the committee, noted how American250 was established by Congress in 2016 to organize celebrations on behalf of all Americans without any political interference. "It was designed to leverage public-private partnerships without any quid pro quo or outsized political influence infecting the celebrations," the report read, adding that the White House made a concerted effort to get the commission to do its bidding.

The list of demands included spectacles focused on promoting Trump rather than the country, "forcing partisan content, campaign-style fundraisers, and favored contractors onto an organization Congress designed to serve the whole country, not one party or president." America250 resisted such demands to no avail as the White House developed a replacement. "Freedom 250 LLC, a shadow organization capable of infiltrating the celebrations and injecting America’s 250th with Trump’s extreme, partisan agenda," the report said.

In fact, the report goes on to state that the Trump administration lodged this shadow organization inside the National Park Foundation to "exploit the credibility and donor relationships of a beloved public charity while operating outside the transparency rules Congress wrote into law." Freedom 250 then misled donors who intended to support America250 by handing over its bank information. This could constitute wire fraud and charitable solicitation fraud under federal and District of Columbia law, according to the report.

"Donald Trump's hijacking of America's 250th birthday will go down as one of the most corrupt, brazen abuses of public trust in presidential history, even by the dubious standards of this administration," Huffman said in a statement. "We've uncovered extensive evidence of corruption, self-enrichment, and potential crimes. The Republican majority in Congress, which has far more power than we do, could have joined us in demanding answers. Instead, they've used their power to shield the individuals and entities involved."

Some of the key findings

One of the most serious allegations in the report suggests that Freedom 250 sold access to the President and courted foreign money in America's name. "The organization circulated sponsorship packages starting at $500,000 and climbing above $10 million, backed by a 'historic photo opportunity' with Trump. Its CEO solicited foreign governments, corporations, and individuals at the World Economic Forum in Davos to fund the President’s priorities," the report said, pointing out that this violated the Constitution's Foreign Emoluments Clause.

Another crucial aspect of the report details how Event Strategies, Inc., the firm that helped plan the January 6th rally, collected tens of millions in federal contracts connected to the anniversary, including a master contract worth up to $100 million. "Trump traded in the stock of companies that donated to Freedom 250 and staged a White House UFC fight that shamelessly promoted his own investments and business ventures," the report asserted.

Furthermore, the report flagged that Campaign Nucleus handled Freedom 250's event registration process. The company, founded by Trump campaign operative Brad Parscale, used artificial intelligence to score visitors and target "persuadable" voters. "Thousands of unwitting fans handed over their personal information at a free FIFA World Cup Fan Zone on the National Mall," the report said.

The report also detailed how the White House imposed a "false, Christian nationalist history." It alleged that federally funded "freedom trucks" carried revisionism and outright falsehoods to schoolchildren, including an AI rendering of George Washington claiming: 'our rights are a gift from God.' "There is no record of Washington ever making such a statement," the report highlighted, concluding that Freedom 250 created a blueprint for corruption, not a one-time abuse.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, however, told CNN that the claims in the report were "categorically false." "This so-called 'report' is nothing more than a partisan smear from politicians who would rather manufacture division than celebrate America's 250th birthday alongside the rest of the country," the publication quoted her as saying.
