Donald Trump recommends Lindsey Graham's sister as interim senator for South Carolina
President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he had recommended the late Lindsey Graham's sister, Darline, to serve as an interim senator to South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster in a Truth Social post. "This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!" he said. According to the law of the state, Governor McMaster has the authority to appoint an interim senator for the rest of Graham's term.
Darline Graham Nordone lost both her parents as a teenager. At the time, former Senator Graham was in his 20s and became her legal guardian so that she could receive military benefits after joining the Air Force, as per Newsweek. "Lindsey was always my parent," she had said earlier. Recommending her for the post of an interim senator faced backlash, as she has neither held a public office nor does she have experience actively working in politics.
However, there are some who have already expressed their support for the recommendation. GOP South Carolina Senator Tim Scott took to X to say that Nordone would be a "fantastic" choice for an interim senator. "After speaking with Darline, there is no one better who understands Lindsey's love for family, our state, and our country," he wrote. This was not the only recommendation President Trump had to honor the life of Senator Graham.

He also urged the Senate to pass the Clarity Act as a tribute to the late Senator. "China, and many other countries, would like to take complete and total control of this major financial "happening," as well as A.I., where we are now leading, but where they are fighting hard," he wrote in a separate Truth Social post. The Clarity Act is a piece of legislation that would build a comprehensive regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
Senator Graham unexpectedly passed away on Saturday at the age of 71. While the cause of death was not immediately revealed, a preliminary medical examination showed that he died of an aortic dissection stemming from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The former senator returned to the country after an official visit to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, only hours before his sudden passing.
Tributes continue to grow outside the office of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham as more flowers and handwritten messages are placed there throughout the day.
