President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker have a long, historic rivalry that goes beyond their political careers. Pritzker, who is considered a potential Democratic presidential hopeful for 2028, has clashed with the President time and again on his policies, with the two recently locking horns after a university student was shot dead by an illegal immigrant in Chicago last week. Defending his criticism of the President on X, Pritzker referred to a previous statement calling out the alleged "tyrannical" agendas of Trump, and upholding America's democracy

"People ask why I push back so hard on Donald Trump. It's simple: Tyranny requires your fear, your silence, and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage," Prtizker wrote on X, following a barrage of comments on high grocery and gas prices, and Trump's "illegal adventure" in Iran. The post was a reference to his State of the State speech last year, and it came amid the ongoing clash between him and Trump.

On Monday, President Trump blamed Pritzker's policies for the murder of Chicago-area college student Sheridan Gorman, who was shot dead by an illegal alien and Venezuelan citizen, Jose Medina-Medina. In a fundraising dinner of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), Trump said, "The illegal alien monster charged with Sheridan's brutal murder had come illegally from Venezuela and had been released into our country by Sleepy Joe Biden." He went on to add that Medina "was then arrested again and released again by the Democrat Governor J.B. Pritzker, one of the worst governors in the history of our country, in the sanctuary city of Chicago," the New York Post reported.

As per the publication, Medina-Medina crossed the border illegally in 2023, during former President Biden's term, and was released into the country. He was then arrested for shoplifting from a Macy's in Chicago, but was released under the city's sanctuary policies. In the recent incident, Medina-Medina allegedly pulled a gun on Gorman and her friends near Chicago's lakefront and shot the teenager in the head during an altercation, as seen in security camera footage. Trump highlighted the brutal killing, accusing Democrats of not caring about Americans. "Democrat politicians don't care about the American blood they spill in their very demented pursuit of these open borders," Trump argued. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also echoed the President's statement, as Acting Secretary Lauren Bis stated Gorman was "failed by open border policies and sanctuary politicians."

Pritzker then hit back, accusing the Trump administration of "politicizing" the death of the 18-year-old student. "Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and Loyola University community grieving the senseless murder of Sheridan Gorman," Pritzker's office said in a statement obtained by NewsNation. In the statement, the governor added that violent crime has no place in Chicago's streets and the perpetrator will be held accountable for the crime. "The Trump Administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts," the statement concluded.
