'Admission of his own failure': Alex Cole reminds Trump who was in charge during the 2020 vote
President Donald Trump has yet to concede that the 2020 presidential election, in which he lost to former President Joe Biden, was free and fair. If reports are accurate, he plans to make that case again in a primetime address on Thursday. Independent journalist Alex Cole was quick to push back. "So Donald Trump's primetime address is about foreign infiltration in the 2020 election. Funny...he was the president in 2020. If foreign infiltration happened on his watch, that's an admission of his own failure," he wrote on X.
There's a very common playbook that leaders use when they fear that they or their party are going to lose an election. So, here are some of the steps in that authoritarian playbook that you should look out for:

1⃣ Install loyalists to key positions around the elections. The…
The 80-year-old announced on Monday via Truth Social that he will be making a speech to the nation, but stopped short of revealing what it will be about. However, multiple agencies reported that the national address will concern newly declassified intelligence on investigations into U.S. elections and voting machine vulnerabilities, according to Reuters, which added that Trump may rake up his false claim that he lost because of massive fraud.
Trump is giving a primetime speech, not to address why we're (still) at war with Iran or how he's going to lower costs and fix his crumbling economy, but to spread lies about our elections because he's afraid of losing in the midterms.

It's pathetic. Sore loser syndrome. https://t.co/46XYUTMkrv
The Republican president's claims are widely seen as having helped trigger the January 6 riot, in which his supporters attempted to block Biden's confirmation. It's worth noting that a March 2021 report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence found no indication that any foreign actor altered technical aspects of the 2020 U.S. election, including voter registration, ballot casting, vote tabulation, or the reporting of results.
There was a rumor a couple weeks ago that Trump was looking to make a deal with Maduro to let him out of prison if he testifies that Hugo Chavez rigged the election for Biden, which was Sidney Powell and Rudy’s insane conspiracy. pic.twitter.com/Fv7LIEhCss

Many experts, including seasoned Democrats, contend that Trump is laying the groundwork to raise the specter of 2020 interference to justify contesting midterm election results. Georgia is reportedly central to this plan. Several online news outlets suggested Trump also plans to cast doubt on the legitimacy of Georgia's results. The state's two Democratic senators countered that the president is simply afraid of losing the midterms.
Donald Trump is trying to cast doubt on 2020 to justify interfering in 2026. We see what he is doing and it will not work. Stay vigilant.

"So he will reheat debunked election conspiracy theories and tell bizarre new lies to deny his 2020 defeat and attack voting rights. From the start, Trump's obsession with Georgia elections revealed his fury that Black voters were instrumental to his defeat," Sen. Jon Ossoff said on X. Trump's adviser, however, has refuted reports that the president plans to discuss the 2020 Senate elections in Georgia, Axios reported.
For months, I’ve been warning that Trump might try finding “fraud” from the 2020 election in order to justify heavy interference in our midterms.

It looks like that “announcement” could be coming this Thursday.
Don’t believe the narrative he’s trying to push. https://t.co/1FTHB7FGy9
Trump has sought evidence to back his claims since returning to power in 2025, directing Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel to investigate Georgia's 2020 election count. This led to a controversial January raid on Fulton County's elections warehouse in Georgia, where agents seized roughly 600 boxes of ballots. But the investigation hasn't gone smoothly: the FBI fired two analysts last week after they refused to take part, reportedly arguing that the assignment wasn't justified under departmental policy, MS NOW reported.
