Illinois Governor JB Pritzker launched a sharp critique of the Trump administration's decision to seek a $1 billion for a ballroom in the White House's east wing, demanding that the money be spent on offering "tariff relief for working families and small businesses" instead. He urged that it was "time to put working families ahead of Trump’s ego" in a caustic post on X.

The governor’s figure refers to a specific provision, recently introduced by Senate Republicans, giving the Secret Service the funds for the "East Wing Modernization Project", which was tucked into a broader $70 billion spending package primarily focused on immigration enforcement, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It must be noted that a group of Senate Republicans has also introduced a bill to authorize $400 million in taxpayer funds for the ballroom specifically.

The figure has come under a lot of fire from the Democrats, who blame the administration for pursuing a vanity project at a time when average Americans are experiencing a "cost-of-living emergency". Senator John Hickenlooper (D-CO) pointed out that the crisis had become an emergency as families are coughing up nearly $1,700 in "illegal tariff-taxes".

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) reminded her followers that the president had promised the ballroom would not cost taxpayers a single penny, but they were now being made to foot the bill.  She revealed that she was blocking the Republicans from passing the bill.

This may not go down well with Americans who expressed their reservations in a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos. As many as 56 per cent of respondents opposed the project, which began in October 2025 with bulldozers razing down the old structure.

Trump has remained defiant in a media interaction, claiming that the billion dollars are not "all for the ballroom" but for several other safety projects in the White House. "We're putting up $400 million to do the ballroom section of the ballroom. We are putting that up privately," he told reporters, pinning the blame for the escalating cost on the demands of the military. "It's under construction. It's ahead of schedule. It's right on budget," he added.

The price tag for Trump’s ballroom has risen dramatically since July last year, when it was first announced at a full cost of $200 million. The quoted price remains at $400 million. Trump explained that the change in the cost was due to a revision of the original proposal after "deep-rooted studies" in a Truth Social post.

"...it is approximately twice the size, and a far higher quality...(the earlier plan) would not have been adequate to handle the necessary events, meetings, and even future Inaugurations," he averred.
