The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raided the office of Democratic Senator Lillie Louise Lucas on Wednesday over an "ongoing investigation," the details of which have not been made public. Reports have, however, stated that the raids come as part of an ongoing federal corruption probe. As per Fox News, which first reported about the federal searches, the raids were part of a "federal corruption and illegal marijuana sale probe." The Associated Press, too, quoted an anonymous source as confirming that the searches were part of a corruption probe. Raids were also conducted on a nearby cannabis dispensary co-owned by Senator Lucas.

As per federal law enforcement sources, the FBI had executed criminal search warrants at Lucas' office in Portsmouth, Virginia. The cannabis dispensary has reportedly been under scrutiny in the past after an earlier investigation found products that were mislabeled or exceeded legal THC limits. "This is an ongoing investigation, and no further information is publicly available at this time," a spokesperson for the FBI said.

As soon as the news about the FBI's action against Lucas spread, Democrats cried foul, claiming that the raid was an example of President Donald Trump "weaponizing" the country's criminal justice department. Representative Bobby Scott questioned the timing of the raid as it took place only a couple of weeks after Democrats won the referendum to redraw Virginia’s congressional maps. Lucas was instrumental in the recent Democratic redistricting win in Virginia.

"It should be noted that this is occurring just two weeks after Senator Lucas helped lead the successful effort by Virginia voters to reject President Trump's attempt to rig the midterm elections," Rep. Scott said, and claimed that the raid on Lucas's office came after the President "pressured" the DOJ to go after "New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, and multiple Democratic Members of Congress."

Virginia House Speaker Don Scott also raised questions about the federal action and urged people to exercise patience until the facts are made public before drawing their own conclusions. "At this point, we simply do not know what this ultimately means. Right now, there is far more theatrics and speculation than actual information available to the public," he said. He also questioned how Fox News was able to reach the scene of the raid so quickly. "Did they know about the raid beforehand? If so, who approved that? And what more information is there about what this raid was actually about? Virginians deserve answers before anyone rushes to political conclusions," he said.
