The opening days of President Donald Trump's unilaterally declared operation against Iran have ignited a political firestorm at home, with the President's niece questioning him for a "depraved" focus on his ballroom renovations while American service members and foreign children were dying. 'Operation Epic Fury', launched to neutralize Iran's leadership, advanced weaponry, and nuclear ambitions, continues with little clarity over how the Trump administration intends to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East. Retaliatory strikes that killed six American service members and a disputed airstrike that Iran claims hit a primary school have instead amplified domestic discord and renewed scrutiny of President Trump's decision. Recent press statements by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and State Secretary Marco Rubio have only ignited this discord.

Among the many critics of the U.S.A.'s "preemptive strike" on Iran, Mary L. Trump, the President's niece, took to social media to offer a scathing critique of the Trump administration. She described the conflict as "a war of his choosing." "Scores of Iranian children are dead; six American service members are dead," Mary wrote, "The depraved man responsible for those deaths went on a tangent about his gold curtains and his $400 million ballroom because those are his priorities."

Mary's critique comes after President Trump, in a recent press interaction, focused on praising his "gold curtains" that he said he had selected during his first term while discussing his Iran war plans. "See that nice drape? When that comes down right now you see a very, very deep hole, but in about a year and half from now, you're gonna see a very, very beautiful building. And there's your entrance to it right there," Trump said, pointing to gold curtains behind him. "In fact, I think I'll even, I'll save money on the doors because you can't get more beautiful than that. I picked those drapes in my first term. I always liked gold, but I think we can save a lot of money. I just saved, I just saved curtains."

In a recent blog post on her website, Mary critiqued her uncle's lack of concern for American citizens. "Donald Trump does not care about the American people, just as he does not care about the Iranian people. The rationale for this war has changed repeatedly which means there was no legitimate rationale for waging it in the first place," she wrote in the article, titled, 'What Is It All For?'

In a live video, Mary referred to Trump as an "idiot" who might completely lose control of the situation. "Donald Trump does not care about the American people just as much as he does not care about the Iranian people. The rationale of this war has changed by the minute," she said, pointing out Trump's previous claim of having "obliterated" Iran's nuclear program. "What is this war about? Donald can't tell you. Those in his inner circle can't tell you for a fact that his military advisors all advised against this. The generals think it's a terrible idea," she said, adding, "This war is going to cause untold lives and untold billions of dollars...And here's the thing. It may spiral completely out of the control of the idiot who started it in the first place."

Meanwhile, the conflict with Iran has deepened the partisan divide on Capitol Hill. While some Republican lawmakers offered full support for the President's actions, they largely avoided addressing Mary Trump's criticisms or the ballroom controversy directly. Democrats, however, have grown increasingly unified and vocal in their condemnation, mirroring Mary's statements.

"Donald Trump spent more time talking about his ballroom than he did about the loss of those lives," California Governor Gavin Newsom said. "Review the tape. Spent more time talking about his curtains in his ballroom than any of the four service members who died because of his operation and his declaration of war without congressional consent. He still has not articulated a clear vision of what the endgame is. Period. Full stop."
