Celebrated author Don Winslow sharply criticized the Trump administration on Monday, as he claimed that the Iran war effort was a failure. Taking to X, he claimed that the administration was lying to the American public about the conflict in West Asia. Winslow has always been an outspoken critic of the current administration, but he is not the only one questioning the war. Due to the rising price of gas and high inflation, the Trump administration's policies are reportedly losing popularity.

Winslow's criticism comes at a time when President Donald Trump has indicated that a deal with Iran might be just around the corner. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, too, said that the possibility of a deal remains. However, both the President and the U.S. Secretary have remained ambiguous on providing further details. "I think there's strong agreement and alignment on what a preliminary draft should look like," Rubio said, adding, "It's either going to be a good deal, or there isn't going to be one."

Meanwhile, despite the ongoing negotiations, the U.S. launched defensive strikes on southern Iran on Tuesday, targeting missile launch sites and boats attempting to lay mines. As per the New York Times, officials claim that the strikes came as Tehran deployed mine-laying boats in the Strait of Hormuz and launched attack drones towards U.S. ships enforcing their blockade in the region. The timing of the strikes is a test for the ceasefire and potential peace talks between the two delegations.

The strikes came after Rubio claimed that the President had a "historic" call with leaders from the region. Fox News reported that President Trump will convene a Cabinet meeting at Camp David on Wednesday, which would include the outgoing Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard. The meeting will be to decide on the next course of action with regard to the Iran situation.

However, criticism of President Trump's military effort continues to grow. Rep. Thomas Massie, who recently lost his primary against Trump-endorsed former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, claimed that the war would lead to a budget deficit of $2 trillion. "Financing just the new debt costs more than all federal road & bridge projects, and we will be making those new interest payments each year, forever," he said. California Governor Gavin Newsom echoed several Democrats during a recent interview, saying that the high price of gas due to the war had seeped through the economy, and it would take a long time for that damage to be undone.
