Can Trump rename ICE to 'NICE'? Viral idea gains President's endorsement
President Donald Trump, in a recent Truth Social post, endorsed the idea of renaming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement, effectively rebranding it as 'NICE'. The idea, originating from a viral social media post by conservative influencer Alyssa Marie last month, received the President's praise on Sunday.
In her post, Marie wrote, "I want Trump to change ICE to NICE (National Immigration and Customs Enforcement) so the media has to say NICE agents all day everyday." Reposting a screenshot of Marie's proposal on Truth Social, the President wrote in all caps, "GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT."
Trump's post comes at a time ICE remains under fire from Democratic lawmakers and liberal commentators for a series of high-profile controversies that have dominated the political landscape this year. The most prominent among those was the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, by ICE agents in Minneapolis. The incidents, which were captured on video, triggered nationwide protests and led to a months-long standoff between lawmakers over funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without essential reforms to the agency.
Trump supporters have, however, endorsed the ICE agents' actions, calling them necessary to maintain national security. The President himself defended the Minneapolis shootings in a lengthy Truth Social post, writing in all caps, "Let our ICE patriots do their jobs." "12,000 Illegal Alien Criminals, many of them violent, have been arrested and taken out of Minnesota. If they were still there, you would see something far worse than you are witnessing today!" the President wrote.
While it is unclear if Trump plans to follow through with the proposal of renaming ICE, his post has garnered immediate reaction from the White House and his conservative supporters. “President Trump endorses the idea of changing ICE to NICE,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X and shared a Fox News article about the development. Conservative influencer tagged DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, urging him to support the change.
Can Trump rename ICE?
While President Trump has the power to update public branding and signage by executive order, officially changing the agency’s legal name requires congressional support. As ICE was established by the Homeland Security Act of 2002, any formal change in legal documents would require new legislation.

The process also requires significant administrative work. A name change would involve reissuing thousands of federal IDs, updating digital records, and rebranding vehicles and buildings nationwide. However, it should be noted that the Trump administration has sought to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War without congressional approval.
