It’s curious, how strange that we choose to wallow in despair.
We could be living the lives of our dreams. We could be on top of a mountain of confidence, surrounded by blooming flowers of hope. We could be traveling the winds of motivation, kissing the warm rays of love, and flying like a bird on the wings of freedom.
Instead, we choose to live in a pit of depression, drowning in self-hate, without an ounce of hope. Why are we here? Why are we sinking in a hole of despair when we could be singing from the mountaintops?
Why are we trapped in the tendrils of fear?
Our bodies are so tightly wrapped up in ropes of anxiety that we spend all our energy thinking about how terrible we feel. Have we not many times felt the warmth of love, the tickle of motivation, the soft petals of hope? Why do we then return to our cavern of loss? Why do we leave the beautiful landscape of our dreams?
Our bindings of fear drag us back, back into the darkness, back into a drowning state. We crave the decadence of our dreams and yet when we attempt to taste the sweet nectar of our aspirations our fear pulls us tighter. Our mouth fills with the taste of the hatred-rich water that surrounds us.
“You can’t do it,” Fear whispers, “You are not good enough.” Fear speaks to us so often that we can’t even notice the difference between our own thoughts and its capturing words anymore. We believe everything it says because, after all, how can our own thoughts be telling us lies? It must be true, we think, and Fear readily agrees.
We have learned to ignore the light that shines from our dreams.
We choose instead to pretend that we are content in our bitter hole. We place a shiny red bow in the murky water and sigh in relief. We think to ourselves, “Ah, that was all I needed to make this place better.” Eventually, that ribbon grows soggy, moldy, and loses its shine. We think to ourselves, “A simple fix, we’ll just get another bow. How about a shiny blue bow?” However, we get the same result; it becomes dull and mushy. Eventually, we’ll get this right, we think. We get another bow, shiny, and certainly, a new colour. We’ve tried this fix so many times that we are now drowning under the weight of a thousand bows, in the throes of depression.
There is no simple fix, nothing that will instantly transport us to a new place or a new time. The only way to get to the top of the mountain is to claw our way out of the hole and start climbing. Yes, Fear will fight back. Fear will burden us with false words and insults.
We’ve forgotten our power.
We’ve let Fear grow and grow until it seems undefeatable. Fear feeds on the power we give it. Its power comes from our power. Fear can never be stronger than us because it comes from us. Its tricks are just illusions to stop us from reaching our highest potential. There is no solid truth to them.
You have a choice either believe every word Fear says OR take a step into the sunshine and discover your power. Look out of your pit. Look up at the light that shines down on you. See the beauty that you are missing out on. Feel the warmth of love, the tickle of motivation, the soft petals of hope.
