ARE YOU A MAVERICK?
Last summer the Cicadas came back.
I watched as they began awakening and emerging from their places of hiddenness making their presence known at first only by their sunset song. I became fascinated with the different species of Cicada and how long some of them stay hidden before revealing themselves once again to the world. After a little research, I found out that the varying hibernation periods have to do with something called predator saturation. Basically, the more enemies a particular species has the longer it will stay hidden until it can amass a great army with which to make it’s grand entrance thus intimidating it’s many adversaries.
I feel a solidarity with the cicada.
I, too, have felt forced into hiding most of my life. I remember the first time I questioned the powers that be, I was in second grade, and I lifted my little hand to ask, why? Why do we do things the way we do them? From that moment on I always seemed to be out of step with the people around me, hearing the beat of a different drum.
I was branded quickly as rebellious, and a troublemaker, and I found myself frequently the odd one out, surrounded by a world that seemed hostile to the song in my heart. But just like the cicada it was in this place of hiding and obscurity that I began to find my tribe, the other dwellers of these hidden places, people that were just like me, branded as misfits and pushed out, held back or left behind.
Maybe your heart is singing, that’s me, that’s me too!
You think differently for a reason, a good reason. And all of the rejection has been creating a strength of mind, character and resolve in you to live according to your own values, ideas and heart. It was creating a Maverick.
A Maverick is someone who doesn't follow the rules – a disrupter, a reformer, a square peg that won't fit in any round hole, a dreamer and creative that can't be told what to do or think by politics, religion, education, or popular culture. The one that won't sit down and be quiet when people are being oppressed or mistreated and never turns a blind eye to injustice. Mavericks are those that are ready for what's next, revolutionaries and pioneers on a divine assignment to create change.
The world needs us because we are holding the keys to cultural transformation.
It’s time to come out of hiding, singing our sunset song. We have become an army of fully functional, awakened, world-changers that know who they are, and are ready to take their place in history.
