This morning I woke up and asked myself, “Are you willing to allow your natural genius to show up today?”
The question emerged from my gut. A soft voice whispered in my ear, “C'mon girl and listen up. Are you willing to let go of controlling this and that and allow your gut instincts to do their thing? Can you let go of holding back and let your natural genius shine?” This was all before I got out of bed.
Standing in my kitchen with coffee in hand I admired the ripe buds on the orchid plant I've been carefully nurturing. Two of the eight had recently popped open. These buds are not holding back, I thought. They are allowing their natural genius to tell them exactly the right time to show up and shine.
For the last thirty years I've been fascinated with human potential and how we either wake up and realize it or allow it to remain dormant. I've come to trust that we have an incredible potential to be happy, healthy, and vibrant. We have an extraordinary genius that is eager to reach up and step out into the world. This intelligence stirs us from the inside all of the time.
Like a soft voice it whispers in our ears to let go of holding back.
The truth is we can't shut off our genius, but we can shut it down, like when we doubt our capacities or worry about outcomes. We close ourselves off when we try to be perfect or think that we are inadequate. While we can't turn off our potential, we can hide from realizing it.
Whenever you doubt, judge, or worry, you're holding back your potential to SHINE. If you get stuck on your own emotional rollercoaster you'll shut yourself off from the brilliance you were born to share. The truth is that soft voice — your natural genius — is always whispering in your ear, but you may be buzzing along at a speed so fast that you don't hear what it's telling you.
Slow down and get quiet for a mere moment or two and your natural genius might just start to register. If you listen closely enough, you may hear the whisper in your ear just like I did this morning.
Can you let go of holding back and let your natural genius shine?
So how do we do this? How do we stop holding back and start shining? If I had an easy answer I'd bottle it up and sell millions. Based on my own gut wrenching experiences on the subject, I can offer you a few words of advice.
Start to notice how you're living, what you're doing, and what you're saying. Notice how you eat. Notice how you listen. Notice how you interact with your family, friends, and colleagues. Notice the words you use when you talk to yourself. Notice how quickly you are to judge yourself. Notice how and when you freeze up or hesitate in saying or doing something unfamiliar.
Notice, notice, notice, and you will learn exactly how you are holding yourself back from shining brightly in your life. Get to know when you shut down and how you show up.
I've noticed quite a lot in my years, and I have to tell you that it's not always pretty. I'm willing to be brutally honest with myself because noticing is the first step to letting go of holding back. When I let go and allow my natural genius to emerge, I experience a vivid sense of clarity and alertness. I'm in the right place at the right time. I say the right words. I'm patient and kind to those around me. I feel free to create and connect.
In these brilliant moments I feel a profound peace. I am open and ready for my life. I am shining.
So next time you think you are hearing someone whisper in your ear, know that you are. Listen closely, for your natural genius may be asking you to let go of holding back so that you can shine.
