A Simple Thing to Keep Your Heart Healthy

If you want to improve your heart health, consider eating at least one bowl of curry every day.

According to a study published in Nutrition Journal, one culinary serving of curry made with various spices can help dilate the arteries and “[prevent] the cardiovascular harms associated with eating common foods.”

Aside from enhancing the flavor of various dishes, certain spices are also potent medicinal agents. Some spices may even help alleviate the harmful side effects of foods that we usually consume.

A curry is often made with different spices and used as a sauce for dishes.

The study used a traditional Japanese recipe that included eight herbs: Clove, coriander, cumin, garlic, ginger, onion, red pepper, and turmeric.

In the study, researchers observed 14 healthy male subjects. The participants had an average age of 45 and they were fed either a single serving of curry or a spice-free control meal (180 grams [g] of curry or control and 200 g of cooked rice, which had about 500 kilocalories [kcal] in total). The researchers then examined what happened to the subjects’ blood vessels before and after they consumed either meal.

Data from post-meal measurements of the blood ability to pass through the blood vessels (or postprandial flow-mediated vasodilation [FMD]) and other criteria, eating curry increased blood flow through the blood vessels (increased FMD). Meanwhile, eating the curry-free control meal resulted in a decrease in blood flow (decreased FMD).

The results of the test helped the researchers determine that curry prevented the negative effects of the meal due to post-meal “endothelial function.” This means that curry prevented the inner lining/endothelium of the blood vessels from contracting and restricting normal blood flow throughout the cardiovascular system.

The researchers posited that the antioxidant properties of the spices could be behind this health benefit.

They explained that the spices could be “blunting” any blood sugar and/or oxidative stress that may occur after the meal.


Eating curry can mitigate postprandial endothelial dysfunction and it can even prevent heart conditions such as atherosclerosis and other conditions like diabetes mellitus. Even though atherosclerosis, or the “hardening of the arteries,” may take decades to develop, this condition doesn’t usually have any symptoms, making it hard to diagnose the condition.

When an individual has atherosclerosis, they may experience a pathological process called endothelial dysfunction, which starts when the blood vessels are unable to fully relax when faced with stressors such as dietary incompatibilities (like wheat) or psychological (like stress) along with the damage caused by these factors.

Heart disease is the number one killer around the world, and further studies can glean further proof of the benefits of certain medicinal spices used in curry.

Turmeric, one of the spices in curry, offers significant benefits for heart health.

Meanwhile, garlic can help clear plaque from the arteries. Garlic can also help lower the blood pressure of hypertensive patients. Instead of ordering pizza for dinner today, try to make a batch of heart health-boosting curry instead.

  • Japanese curry was introduced to Japan by the British during the Meiji period (1868-1912). However, during this time India was still under colonial rule so curry was deemed a “Western” influence in the Asian country even though the dish was originally from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
  • During the Meiji period, Japanese naval officers first tasted curries when they had dinners with their British counterparts. Since these curries were imported from India, most modern varieties of Japanese curry share characteristics with Anglo curry, which uses curry powder.
  • Since Japanese curries are based on Anglo curry, they are often mild and sweet. Japanese curry isn’t as spicy as curries from other cuisines, hence their popularity in Japan.
  • Curry is considered the national dish of Japan, alongside other favorites like ramen, sushi, and miso soup.

I wanted to mention Mint or Basil even your favorite Berries, ginger and lemons makes great infused water.
I drink a lot of water it’s mice to change it up and have infused too.
I have read it’s Detoxifying especially lemon Water.
They have special Pitchers you can get or you just need a large Glass Jar to let sit overnight.
I also recommend organic ingredients if possible because Pesticides aren’t so good for us.

Interesting to learn about the health benefits of Curry.
I also like Tumeric the Golden tea is really good!
I find we get a lot more veggies By roasting them,Sauté even I’m finding many are good washed well of course and Raw with Hummus.
I’ve also found Sweet potatoes Cut up tossed in Olive Oil with Red Peppers is really good that’s one of the new faves around here,we made together at home it actually doesn’t take long to make a healthy meal but meal
prepping is very helpful if things get busy and hectic or just to make it a easier transition from whatever the day is like.
I’m definitely more plant based these days.
And with weather changing for the better outdoors walking is a favorite.
I’m definitely going to try more Curry.

I was familiar with a lot of the benefits of garlic and even some other health benefits of turmeric and curry. But, I did not know that it carried a lot of benefits for the heart. That’s great to know.

I grew up eating many dishes with curry. Many dishes from Trinidad and Tobago all delisious. I am so grateful my mother explored international cuisine. If you want to eat great food west indian cooking is the best for curry. Chicken and rice, and a must try chicken or goat roti.

I love turmeric, but curry tastes like mildew to me. Cilantro tastes like a strong soap, like LAVA soap. I WILL try a sweet curry but no cilantro, they can go light on the curry and heavy on the turmeric. I use turmeric in a lot of the vegetarian stir frys I make. I eat meat once every 2 or 3 weeks.

I love the taste of curry and other spices. I normally use other spices with pasta dishes while curry with potatoes, bell peppers, coconut milk and chicken (chicken curry). I didn’t know that curry is good for the heart. I should eat dishes with curry more often.

Yeah it’s really healthy to have it in diet..it’s a v.healthy diet.. and good for health…Eat healthy ..Eat stable ..Eat at intervals…drink more water..As species…are need of the body..Fresh vegetables….Fresh fruits..have many benefits for health..chicken,red meet..beaf should be taken but not necessary to make them the part of our diets..Their casual use is not bad..As much you eat..you have to consume it too..you have to exercise..So eat in balance and intake of heavy..and junk..food is not good for health.. 😄😃😆Although we don’t quit them.. sometimes we rush to them..Burgers ..pizza…Steamed red meat…Spicy Grilled chicken.. although Fish is good for heart health.. and good to eat…Mix fruit salad…is all time favourite.. Spicy fried nuggets..are also good dry fruits are good for health ..in some dishes..chicken.. fish..we can add few dry fruits to add flavour,taste and it makes the food healthy..Health is wealth..Eat well.Eat healthy foods…exercise and live a happy healthy life….❤💐

Nite, nite everyone…I always know saffron (turmeric) as we call in Trinidad..Indian people use alot of in foods and drinks…curry we use mostly in different dishes…it’s always good learning something new every day…thanks…

I drink 6 to 8 (16oz) bottle water a day with 1 Tbs Bragg’s vinegar, 1 Tbs cayenne pepper, honey to taste and lost 40 lbs in a month. I also Walk a half of mile to 1 mile. I do Stretches 15 minutes before

Thank You so much again for the help in my weight loss journey . I just used some garlic, onion and onion powder and pepper in my cabbage. And I take turmeric everyday which literally helps my bones . I will purchase cloves, coriander, and cumin. Thank You and I appreciate you guys so much.
