The start of each year is often an inspiring time for many to embark on new goals and aspirations. We are quick to dive into single-minded pursuits of ambitions, without stopping to ask if what we’re aiming too low or if we can achieve more. If you’re looking to raise your game in life this year, below are five simple ways to do just that.
1. How can I add more value?
It’s comforting to stick to status quo but the world we live in is ever evolving. To stay stagnant is equivalent to sliding backwards in a society that’s constantly advancing forward to new modes of operation, thinking, standards and conduct. Actively ask yourself how and where you can add more value to your work, to the relationships in your life and most importantly to your personal growth and development. Particularly in areas where you take for granted, let this be year where you grow better, not just older.
2. Seek and you shall find
In life, we often get what our subconscious asks for. We may tell ourselves that we strive to think positive and be happy but our subconscious is addicted to the drama that conflicts create. We say we want to get rich and be free from financial worries but deep down we think money is evil and we do not deserve to be financially successful. Get aware of your underlying beliefs and desire, see how they are restricting your progress in life. From there, work on replacing them with constructive and empowering thoughts.
3. Take care of your health
I can’t agree more with the adage “health is wealth”. When we’re in good health, we have almost boundless energy to pursue our goals and to perform at a higher level than if we were to be fatigued or worst still, burnt out. Strive to cut back on sugar, processed and junk food, caffeine and alcohol. In its place, fuel your body with clean whole food, greens and fruits and hydrate your body regular with water and herbal tea. To supercharge your rest, aim to sleep 7 to 8 hours daily and out of which, try to get to bed early so you can get as much REM sleep as possible between 10pm to 2am.
4. Devote your energy to your priorities and say no to everything else
Our time and energy are limited. The key to achieving more isn’t about doing more but about prioritizing the areas of our life we want to function at a higher level. This comes with saying no to other less important demands on our attention and action, so we can give our fullest on the things that matter the most. Read up online/offline on assertive communication skills and take courses if necessary. The better we are at saying ‘no’ to invitations and requests that do not align with our values and priorities, the more we are able to give back to the life aspects we want thrive and flourish in.
5. Raise your minimum standards
Sometimes the simplest way to up your game is to simply raise your minimum standards. Subconsciously, we have a level of expectation on our life quality, salary, weight, social status and more that we constantly work towards realizing or upkeeping. These standards are often set by the people in our immediate circle as we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with. We earn around the same level of income, dress similarly, spend our time on similar activities, have similar level of aspiration towards life and more. If we step out of the picture, we’ll see that there are many people out there in the world living life at a higher level, given the same constraints and starting point as us.
